Intro – Precision MicroFab

Precision MicroFab’s engineers can drill holes a fraction of the width of a human hair and ship parts destined for the International Space Station, Mars, and Jupiter, but their website couldn’t tell that story fast enough to keep anyone around to read it. Between a homepage that took up to 14.3 seconds to load and a site that hadn’t caught up with two decades of capability, founder Chris Selley had a blunt self-assessment of the company’s marketing: “rank amateur.” DTD took that as a starting point, not an insult.

MEET THE CLIENT

Precision MicroFab is a microfabrication company that uses femtosecond lasers to cut, drill, weld, and shape parts ranging from a micron to a millimeter, serving industries from aerospace and defense to medical devices and university research. Their parts have flown aboard the James Webb Space Telescope and the International Space Station, and are on their way to Mars and Jupiter’s moon Europa with a shot at Saturn’s moon Titan on the horizon. Despite that resume, Precision MicroFab is a small, tight-knit team of engineers who built their reputation the way most great manufacturers do: word of mouth, repeat business, and work that speaks for itself.

THE CHALLENGE

Precision MicroFab had outgrown its own website. Much of the site’s content was years—in some cases well over a decade—out of date, and it didn’t mention entire lines of business the company had built since, including its custom automated laser systems. On top of that, the site was working against the company from a technical standpoint with long load speed and limited ranking keywords.  And without reliable analytics in place, the team had no clear read on what, if anything, their existing marketing efforts were accomplishing.

  • Site content years out of date, with some pages dating back 15–20 years and no mention of the company’s custom laser systems business
  • Homepage load times as long as 14.3 seconds, well past the point where visitors and Google move on.
  • Only a handful of keywords ranking on page one of Google despite genuinely differentiated capabilities
  • No reliable analytics or lead tracking, leaving the team unable to see what was actually working

THE SOLUTION

GETTING THE STORY STRAIGHT FIRST

Before writing a single page, DTD ran an in-depth messaging session with Precision MicroFab’s engineers and leadership, paired with keyword research based on how their buyers actually search. The result is a framework built for their two key buyers, the engineer evaluating a prototype and the manager scaling into production, anchored by what wins business: femtosecond laser precision, a full prototype-to-production-to-custom-systems path, and a US-based team customers can actually meet.

CONTENT THAT FINALLY SAID IT ALL

With the framework in place, DTD’s copywriters rebuilt the site’s content from the ground up, spotlighting capabilities the old site barely mentioned, like custom automated laser systems, and a client history that includes NASA and the James Webb Space Telescope program. Every page was built around the keyword research so the new content could finally earn organic visibility.

A SITE ENGINEERED TO MATCH THEIR ENGINEERING

DTD designed and built a new WordPress site engineered for speed and search from the ground up, paired with hosting, security monitoring, and a free HubSpot CRM setup so the team could finally see where leads were actually coming from. Thus, replacing a lead-tracking system that had, in their own words, amounted to two whiteboards in a hallway.

THE RESULT

Once the new site launched, Precision MicroFab got its first accurate read on how the site was really performing, and along the way uncovered a problem that had been quietly skewing their numbers for years. Their old analytics setup had been counting a single visitor’s contact-page view, click, and form submission as three separate conversions, making a real conversion tracking issue look like a mysterious drop in leads. With clean, corrected tracking in place, the team could finally see real gains: a faster site that keeps visitors around instead of losing them, meaningfully improved search visibility, and a far clearer picture of engagement than the old site ever offered.
