Inbound vs. Outbound Marketing: A Complete Guide

Hey everybody, David Taylor here, founder and CEO of DTD. For the final video in this series, I’d like to share some marketing mistakes I see companies make all the time. I’ve narrowed my list to the top 6 most common mistakes people make when it comes to digital marketing:

#1 – Expecting results too soon. While it’s possible to see some quick wins right away, digital marketing is a long game. You should see your marketing trending in the right direction within 6 months, but expect sustainable, measurable results after about a year of consistent efforts.

#2 Focussing too much on perfection. Don’t expect perfection. Some experimentation is necessary. And whatever you do, don’t let perfect be the enemy of great. Consider your Marketing as a cycle: strategize, execute, learn, report, adjust– repeat.

# 3 Going tactics-first vs. strategy-first. Sometimes companies just want to get started. But a strategic 12 month marketing calendar is a good idea. Developing a strategy built on SMART business goals, and holding everyone accountable to those results is much better than “random acts of marketing”.

#4 Getting distracted. Be careful not to chase shiny objects and go off course. Create a plan and execute the plan. Empower your marketing team or agency to say ‘no’ to you. Don’t divert your team from the goals you set at the top of the quarter to chase ideas that will waste time, money, and human resources.

#5 Bottlenecking. This is a common pitfall for CEOs and owners. Sometimes approvals will sit on their desk for weeks because they just don’t have bandwidth to review them. Consider empowering someone on your team who has the desire and capacity to expedite your marketing projects. And leave the marketing work to the experts.

And last, but not least…#6 on the mistakes list…. not measuring marketing. Digital marketing is measurable– it should be clear what’s working and what’s not. Review reports monthly make data-driven decisions about what to pull the plug on, and what to invest more money in, so you can replicate success. Now let’s not make any more mistakes. Get started on building your digital ecosystem and meet your potential clients on their buyer’s journey.
